Winter Activity, When It’s Really, Really Cold,

There’s no shame in hitting the gym or a treadmill or dreadmill as it is known when conditions become challenging, or it’s not the weather you enjoy exercising in.  However and providing you feel safe there are some added benefits with training in cold weather.  There are a few caveats to consider ensuring you are prepared for a cold session. “Layer up to keep your core temperature in a normal range to avoid hypothermia setting in.  Consider other health risks that Inhaling cold air can trigger I.e.  asthma bouts of coughing or wheezing that will hamper your breathing.  If you suffer with elevated blood pressure, the cold could lead to triggering other health conditions, especially in older people or those with underlying heart conditions.  If in doubt, check with your health professional to ensure you are not at a high risk of triggering a major health episode.

Regardless of your fitness and health, there are some days when conditions might mean staying inside. There’s no single cutoff temperature that’s considered dangerous, because wind and sunlight play a role. Additionally, consider what the conditions are on your route; slipping and injuring yourself could put you out of action much longer than you intend.  On days that don’t pose any dangers, consider gearing up and getting out there to reap the benefits of winter running. Besides psychological sensations like clearing and creating head space, braving the elements comes with some physical benefits, such as, It helps take the sting out of the winter blues and decreases the impact of seasonal sadness.


The biggest challenge during winter running, when you start a run or exercise is settling into your activity, so it is wise to build slowly for your body to adjust to the elements.  I normally start with a 5 minute walk and a gentle jog and keep check on how I feel before moving up a gear.  Other challenges are the time you go out, is it dark or is it light? Depending on when you go out you should ensure you can be seen, someone knows where you are and the route you are taking.  If you are out on your own or in a group ensure you or the group have mobile in case of emergencies.  Finally be seen, be safe and enjoy the experience.
