Georgie Rolt, elite athlete, physiotherapist and respiratory specialist with Gloucestershire Care Services is taking part in the Comrades Marathon in South Africa. This is a 52 miles double marathon on an uphill course.
Georgie is competing with her friend Heather who have been training together for the event. Georgie said“One thing we do know is it’s going to be our toughest challenge yet and a plunge into unknown territory. The cut off is 12 hours to complete 56 miles & the first 16 miles are entirely climbing”.
As part of the build up in South Africa, they have had a magical couple of days with the Madikwe Mambas in Madikwe game reserve tracking Cheetahs, spotting Rhinos & running with Zebra & Wildebeest. Georgie never thought she would get to the start line when 8 weeks ago running more than 3 miles was a struggle. But with a bit of patience, a lot of encouragement & support here they are.
This is Georgie’s first big challenge after having her daughter Millie in February this year. This will have additional challenges for Georgie to overcome to on the marathon which will probably have an impact her final finishing position. Georgie will be pumping and dumping during the race, in order to continue breast feeding when she returns home (submitted by Georgie in her own words).
