Keeping Active this Winter
Keeping active is important but it can be especially difficult to keep up your fitness in the winter. When it’s frosty and dark outside, try and motivate yourself by joining challenges like the couch to 5K #C25k programme or joining the weekly hustle challenges.
When it’s cold and windy outside, going for a run or walk might be the last thing you feel like doing. With the right preparation though, winter running can be rewarding and enjoyable.
Getting the blood pumping isn’t only beneficial for your physical health but it can also give your mental health a boost, even when the weather is miserable. Whatever the season always stay safe and be seen when exercising: dress for the weather and avoid trips or falls by being aware of your surroundings. Try taking some form of light or body touch on your runs when the routes have poor visibility. For additional safety, try running in organised groups and make sure you have a mobile with you in case of emergencies. Remember when going out on your own, let someone know what route you are taking and a rough time of how long you will be.
Use the winter months training to maintain manageable distances through the season, remember to stay hydrated and always warm down after your exercise periods.
