H8H News Update



Couch to 5km programme

We started the first programme of 2020 and have completed the first two runs of week 1.  It is exciting to see colleagues returning to the programme as well as new starters.  We already have a buzz amongst the group and are already seeing some great progress.  Positivity and achievement is certainly on the agenda in the group and everyone is starting their new year challenges with an aim to complete the programme, even though we experienced rain and wind on the second run.  Looking forward to moving into week 2 of the programme next week.


How to be more active at work

Office-based behaviors revealed that 77% of their working day is spent sitting and this has long-reaching effects on our health in such ways as obesity; heart problems, depression and diabetes.  Here are a few tips to improve behavior in the work place.


Every little bit counts so a moving initiative by doing an hour or at least 30 minutes more of physical activity every day, especially some that makes you huff and puff a bit. This is easier than it sounds as you can spread out that time over the whole day. It can be made up from a mix of different activities. “If you're not very active at the moment, start off gradually with activities like brisk walking or bike riding and building up to a 30 minutes a day of activity. “Once you can manage that, try to build your time up gradually to 60 minutes or more. Also, try to do a mix of moderate and vigorous activity.

Work or group active challenges are a good way to get motivated. Group lunch time walks, 1-2-1 meetings, team walking meetings, or light active session will help you to break into activity and being part of a group will support you achieve your own goals. Remember your main competitor is yourself but a group will help you focus and give you something to aim for.

Organisations would benefit from an active workforce, it reduces sickness levels, stress in the workplace and supports productivity.  Standing meetings using cuddles and huddles are great for bringing teams together and by adding a little activity also helps get staff out who don’t normally get to much activity.
