Couch Graduation 2023/1

After 27 runs we have finally completed another couch course.  We started in the dark and would like to think we finished in the light, but unfortunately we have had to run through a few wet runs.  Throughout this course we have had some ups and downs, with some members experiencing injuries, which has caused a few set backs but hopefully we will see them return when they have recovered.  Some of the members experienced covid again and have had to take a break from running, which is understandable.  But looking towards graduation everyone who managed to stay with the programme made it across the finish line and were presented awards by Mary Hutton CEO of the ICB, and Cath Leech CFO, who are big supporters of the programme.

With each course we recognise inspiring achievements and could not be prouder of the members who picked up the Health&Hustle inspiration awards.  The first award was presented to Andrea who had the highest attendance and always brought a bit of humour to the group.  After catching covid and returning to the group after testing negative she had to work hard to catch up.  Even though it was apparent that the virus had hit her hard she did not give in.

Leslie picked up the second award.  After graduating from the couch course she has progressed to joined the 5-10km group.  Her sense of accomplishment is something we are all proud of and she is turning out to be a real role model within the group.  Her aspirations and goals are very clear and in June she will be taking part in the Cheltenham running festival supporting the group raise funds for the Gloucestershire Hospitals Trust charity funds.  As Leslie heads towards her birthday milestone the crew will be supporting her realise her running objectives and celebrating future achievements at events this year.

Our final award went to Adam Yeates , who like Leslie has gone from strength to strength with his running.  Since graduating last year, Adam has completed a half marathon and continues to train for future events.  The course has helped Adam lose a significant amount of weight, which has given him the confidence to help him achieve other life goals.  Adam has used the course as evidence towards his Duke of Edinburgh silver award, and will be returning as a run leader to help contribute towards his DoE Gold award.  His achievements don’t stop here as he continues to get fit and apply to join as a reserve member of the Armed Forces.

The sense of achievements of seeing these successes are priceless and everyone in the group are the real stars.  Getting to the start line is the hardest part of the course, the challenges throughout the runs are mental as well as physical and our run leaders are there to support everyone taking part.  There is no such place as last, crossing the start line makes you a winner.  Don’t forget, we start again on Tuesday 18 April, meeting at Edward Jenner Court, Brockworth.  You can register for a place on the day, or just try a taster session.  Until then, we will see you at the start line.
